Whenever I’m struggling to find clarity about my career development’s next steps, I have a tried-and-true method to get inspired. Today on the blog, I’m sharing how to stop procrastinating and take inspired action. I follow the exact process to find clarity and feel confident in creating a clear plan for success. I’m excited to share this inside look, so check it out!
If you find yourself struggling with feelings of uncertainty and anxiety about your future, you’re not alone. You are not satisfied with where you’re at in your life or dealing with a lack of clarity about where you want to go. It can be enough to lock you into a state of overwhelm.
As a result, your chronic state of overwhelm can easily lead to procrastination and paralysis – to the point where you don’t take any actions at all to change or improve your situation.
“A step in the wrong direction is better than staying on the spot all our life. Once you’re moving forward, you can correct your course as you go. Your automatic guidance system cannot guide you when you’re standing still.”– Maxwell Maltz
Unfortunately, when you don’t take any action to move your life in a new direction, you can become too comfortable sitting still. I often refer to this as feeling ‘comfortably uncomfortable.’ What I mean is that you have learned to tolerate a state of living small, you avoid taking risks, and remain indecisive as you hang out at ‘hesitation station’.
When you’re living at hesitation station, you’re most likely feeling anxious as you wait for something to change. You hope that something or someone will cross your path and provide you with clear directions to reach your final destination.
The first problem is you haven’t figured out where it is that you want to go. The second problem is you haven’t been proactive in trying to figure this out. So, you live at ‘hesitation station’ where you can live small, avoid taking risks, and continue down the path to procrastination that takes you to nowhere.
“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.”– Yogi Berra.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I know what you’re going through because I’ve been there, as have many of my clients.
If you want to stop procrastinating and find inspiration to move your life and career forward, the first step is to ask yourself if you are ready for change, willing to change, and able to change.
You might feel ready because you realize that if you remain living in a comfortably uncomfortable state, your will never make your dreams a reality. You might be willing to change, but you don’t have the confidence, clarity, or knowledge to set this in motion. You might also be questioning if you can change, and it’s tempting to simply not put forth the effort without help.
I want you to know that this is where I can step in and provide you with external guidance, direction, and motivation. I hope that this will give you the courage you need to look inside yourself and assess what you truly desire to change to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
To help take your first step to access your automatic guidance system, take some time for self-reflection by asking yourself the following questions. These are powerful questions that, when answered honestly, will inspire you to take action towards being confident in your future. The more you get into action, the more your confidence will grow, and you’ll start moving away from the station that’s kept you stuck for so long.
The goals that you set out to accomplish will have a chance to be met, and your dreams will become a reality.
So, are you ready, willing, and able to finally get out of your comfortably uncomfortable zone?
I certainly hope so. You most likely are if you are still reading this!
I encourage you to empower yourself by setting aside some uninterrupted time to reflect on the following five questions that can change your life – answer them as honestly as you can.
- What are you no longer willing to tolerate in your life, work and relationships? These are the things you typically complain about, resist and drain your energy.
- What are the things in your life, work, and relationships that you feel are going well for you right now? In other words, what is working for you?
- What would make these things even better for you? What needs to happen to improve these areas of your life?
- Where do you want to be in 3, 6, 12 months from now? What is the most important goal or big dream that you want to achieve?
- What are the problems that need to be solved to get there?
